Epoxy Floor Topcoat Guide
Apr 13, 2026Choosing the right coating system is a critical decision for every epoxy flooring job. Each system has different performance characteristics, visual appeal, application requirements, and price points.
Understanding Your Options
The most common systems include solid-color epoxy, flake (chip) broadcast systems, quartz broadcast systems, metallic epoxy, and polyaspartic coatings. Each serves different purposes: flake systems dominate residential garages, quartz systems excel in commercial settings, metallics are the premium show-stopper, and polyaspartics offer fast cure times.
What Sells Best
For most residential contractors, full-flake epoxy systems are the bread and butter. They look great, hide imperfections, provide excellent slip resistance, and customers love the color variety. They're also forgiving to install, making them ideal for newer contractors.
Expanding Your Service Menu
As you gain experience, adding metallic and polyaspartic systems lets you upsell existing customers and attract higher-budget clients. A metallic floor in a man cave or showroom can command $8–$15 per square foot — double or triple a standard flake floor.
